AI Chat Free No Sign Up: Access Options
Compare AI chat options that are free and require no sign-up: OpenAI documents logged-out ChatGPT access in supported countries, while Google documents only some signed-out Gemini web features.
If you are looking for an AI chat free of sign-up, OpenAI explicitly documents one logged-out ChatGPT conversation in supported countries, but says the option is not yet available in Europe except the UK (The ChatGPT home page, read October 1, 2026). Google says some Gemini web features also work without signing in; Anthropic and xAI do not document a logged-out mode because Claude requires an account and Grok asks you to sign in with X or email (Gemini sign-in help, Claude login help, and Grok product page, read October 1, 2026). Free access and no sign-up are not the same thing.
AI Chat Free With No Sign-Up Options
OpenAI’s no-account option is available at chatgpt.com. A logged-out visitor can have one conversation at a time. Starting another conversation makes the previous one inaccessible, and the current chat remains available only for that session in the same browser. It cannot be saved or continued after you log out. Creating an account adds saved chat history, data export, chat sharing, and custom instructions (OpenAI’s account-access details, read October 1, 2026).
Gemini offers a more limited version of signed-out access. Google says some features in the Gemini web app work without signing in, but it does not list every feature available in that mode. Additional features and saving Gemini Apps activity require a Google Account. The mobile app requires you to be signed in, and access can depend on the device, language, and country or territory (Google’s Gemini sign-in requirements and mobile-app requirements, read October 1, 2026).
Claude and Grok do not offer a comparable guest mode in the cited pages. Anthropic’s login page directs you to use Google or an emailed link, while xAI says Grok users sign in with an X or email account (Anthropic login help and xAI’s Grok page, read October 1, 2026).
What You Lose Without an Account
For ChatGPT, the clearest losses are saved history and continuity. Without an account, you cannot retain the conversation beyond the current browser session, export your ChatGPT data, share chats, or set custom instructions (OpenAI’s account benefits, read October 1, 2026).
For Gemini, the documented losses are saving activity and access to the additional features reserved for signed-in users. Google does not say that signing in gives a signed-out visitor every Gemini feature, so the account-free experience should not be treated as equivalent to the full service (Gemini sign-in help, read October 1, 2026).
Claude and Grok are different cases: their cited pages do not describe a signed-out version whose features you can compare with an account version. Their free labels therefore describe entry after sign-in, not anonymous use (Claude pricing and Grok product page, read October 1, 2026).
What Each Free Plan Includes
An account is not necessarily a paid upgrade. As read in October 2026, the vendors describe the following free access:
- ChatGPT Free: unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, with limited uploads, images, voice, and deep research (OpenAI pricing, read October 1, 2026).
- Claude Free: chat through the web, desktop, and mobile interfaces, plus web search, file creation, code execution, and memory (Anthropic pricing, read October 1, 2026).
- Gemini Free: access with a Google Account to 3.6 Flash, varying access to 3.1 Pro, and 15 GB of storage (Google AI plans for the United States, read October 1, 2026).
- Grok: xAI says it is free to try on the web and in its apps. The page says SuperGrok adds higher limits and multi-agent reasoning, but it does not publish specific per-plan limits there (xAI’s Grok page, read October 1, 2026).
These are vendor descriptions, not test results. Chat Picker has not tested these assistants for quality, speed, accuracy, reliability, or benchmark performance. Its comparison pages reproduce vendor-published plans, prices, limits, and feature placements with sources and read dates; figures that could not be confirmed are marked “Not verified” and left blank.
Signing Up for ChatGPT
OpenAI’s cited pages do not establish one mandatory signup method for every ChatGPT account. A separate help article documents phone-only accounts, but it does not say that every new account must use a phone number. For a phone-only account, password reset is handled by SMS. Upgrading to Plus, Pro, or Teams still requires a verified email address. After linking an email, the user can switch to Google, Apple, or Microsoft login under the same account (OpenAI’s phone-only signup help, read October 1, 2026).
Signing Up for Claude
Claude offers two documented sign-in routes: continue with a Google account or request a secure link by email. If you open the emailed link on a different device from the one that requested it, Claude generates a verification code that must be entered on the original device (Anthropic login help, read October 1, 2026).
Phone verification is required when you first create a Claude account. Anthropic sends a six-digit text message code and says there is no way to skip this step. You must be physically located in a supported location and use a text-capable number from a supported location. VoIP numbers, Google Voice, app-created numbers, and landlines are not accepted (Anthropic’s phone verification help, read October 1, 2026).
Signing Up for Gemini
Gemini uses a Google Account. Signing in provides access to additional features and allows Gemini Apps activity to be saved. The mobile app also requires a signed-in Google Account, an eligible device, and an available language and location. The cited Google pages do not state that a phone-number verification code is required (Gemini sign-in help and mobile-app help, read October 1, 2026).
Signing Up for Grok
Grok requires an X or email account. The xAI page does not specify a phone-verification requirement or a precise regional restriction for its sign-in method (xAI’s Grok product page, read October 1, 2026).
How to Decide
Use the access requirement that matches your situation:
- If you need a full guest conversation, OpenAI is the only cited vendor here that explicitly documents logged-out chat. Check the supported-country condition and the Europe exception first.
- If a limited signed-out Gemini web feature meets your need, Gemini may fit without creating an account. Do not assume that saving activity or every feature is included.
- If you need saved ChatGPT history, plan to create an account; logged-out threads cannot be retained.
- If you already have a Google Account but still need a Claude account, be prepared for Anthropic’s separate supported-location phone verification.
- If you already use X or email and want Grok’s free entry, the documented setup is an X or email sign-in.
