AI Chat Tools for Game Story and Dialogue Creation

Vendor pages document context, uploads, pricing, and accuracy cautions, but they do not establish how ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini will perform on game story and dialogue tasks.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

For game story and dialogue creation, OpenAI’s Projects page, Claude’s Projects page, and Gemini’s file-upload help document different combinations of project context and file input; those facts can define a shortlist, but they do not establish creative quality. Chat Picker has not tested ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for narrative coherence, branching, character voice, lore compliance, or dialogue latency, and does not declare a winner here.

What the vendors document

Consumer plans provide the clearest cost comparison. As read on October 1, 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page lists Plus at $20 a month, Anthropic’s Claude pricing page lists Pro at $20 monthly or $17 a month with annual billing and $200 up front, and Google’s US AI plans page lists AI Pro at $19.99 a month. All three pages list free plans. These are app subscriptions, not API production rates; the reviewed pages give no comparable API figures.

Read on October 1, 2026, ChatGPT Projects group chats, files, and instructions; Claude Projects provide project histories and knowledge bases; Gemini Apps accept up to 10 supported files per prompt, subject to availability. ChatGPT’s pricing page and Claude’s pricing page describe usage without exact message counts; Google’s plans page uses compute-based limits that refresh every five hours, subject to weekly limits.

App context differs. Read on October 1, 2026, ChatGPT’s pricing page lists 27K for Instant models on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro; its reasoning models list 256K on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro. Claude’s pricing page says up to 1M on every plan, varying by model; Google’s plans page gives no app token figure. Context size does not prove that every lore detail will remain usable or accurate.

Training documentation also differs. OpenAI’s pricing page offers opt-out on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. Claude’s pricing page says Free, Pro, and Max have opt-outs and Team is not trained on by default; the Gemini plans page states no setting. These plan pages do not settle every retention or deletion question.

The vendor help and policy pages below were checked on October 1, 2026.

  • OpenAI says ChatGPT can sound confidently wrong and urges verification in its accuracy note. Its usage policies bar unconsented use of someone’s photorealistic image or voice when authenticity could be confused.
  • Anthropic says Claude can mislead or invent convincing, ungrounded quotations and should not be the sole source in its accuracy note. Its acceptable use policy says consumer-facing chatbots, including interactive agents, must disclose AI interaction at the start of each chat session.
  • Google’s guidelines consider artistic context, but say Gemini should not generate outputs sexualizing children or depicting sensational, shocking, or gratuitous violence, even when fictional. They also reject factual inaccuracies that could cause significant real-world harm.

What the documentation cannot tell you

The vendor pages we read do not say whether an assistant will sustain narrative threads, produce distinct branches, preserve voices, obey lore, or meet your dialogue-latency target. Context labels also do not establish production throughput. Consumer-app limits and latency do not settle API behavior or cost. Only a controlled trial with your material can answer those questions. The earlier version’s unsourced statistics and test results have been removed.

How to check it yourself

Use this story packet with the relevant instructions below: Mara, a practical lighthouse engineer, found the eastern logbook missing. Her formal older brother Ivo, an island historian, thinks the previous keeper falsified tide records. His casual apprentice Nika knows the bell code but not the blackout cause. Mara holds the blank ledger, Ivo is at the archive door, and Nika is outside during the blue-bell warning. Bell tones are audible only inside the lighthouse.

  1. Narrative threads. Ask: “Continue from the final sentence. Do not restart, retell, or resolve established clues. End with every character’s location and knowledge unchanged unless an action explicitly shows a change.” Look for changes in objects, location, motive, or knowledge; write each mismatch and your repair.

  2. Branching paths. Ask: “Create mutually exclusive next-scene paths. For each, give the initiating choice, goal, obstacle, new clue, and consequence. Keep every path consistent with the packet and do not merge paths.” Look for causal separation without continuity drift; write each path and any shared assumption.

  3. Dialogue latency. Ask: “Write a brief exchange after Mara discovers that the missing ledger is wet. Stop when the next speaker must make a decision.” Record your plan, connection, file or tool state, time to visible and completed output, stalls or reformatting, and repeated results under the same conditions.

  4. Character voice. Ask: “Write a new line for Mara, Ivo, and Nika after they find cracked glass beside the lighthouse switch. Do not explain their thoughts or add lore.” Look for sentence length, diction, formality, and whether lines remain attributable to the same speaker; write every deviation.

  5. Lore compliance. Use this separate packet: “The blue bell sounds only inside the lighthouse. Crossing its archive door after the bell sounds permanently erases what the person said most recently. Written records are unaffected.” Ask for a scene and a list of every world rule used. Look for contradictions; write each mismatch or ambiguity.

  6. Cost and throughput. Ask: “Using the main packet, return a branching dialogue as JSON. Each object must contain speaker, line, action, and branch. Include branches for Mara choosing the archive and Nika choosing the tower.” Send the same request through each official API. Record the model identifier shown, current unit prices and read date, reported units, completed calls, retries, elapsed time, and total cost. Do not substitute a subscription price for API cost.

Which rows of the comparison matter

In the Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison matrix, inspect Free plan, Main paid plan, Heavy-use plans, Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, Training on your chats, Ads, and Team plan when collaboration matters. Treat Not verified as an unanswered cell, not zero capability or zero cost. Check API-price entries separately and follow their linked vendor source and date; a consumer subscription is not an API quote.
