Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: Data Export

OpenAI documents self-service data copies for signed-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users, but vendor pages do not compare export completeness.

For claude vs chatgpt vs gemini data export, the vendor pages settle only parts of the question. OpenAI documents self-service data copies for signed-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users; Anthropic mentions standard exports for Team and Enterprise; and the Gemini pages read here do not document an export route. Chat Picker has not tested the assistants, so this page does not call one export more complete or easier than another.

What the vendors document

As read on October 2026, OpenAI’s data controls page says signed-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users can request a copy of their data through ChatGPT settings or the OpenAI Privacy Portal. It says Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces have no self-service export and should contact the workspace owner. Eligible Edu workspaces may allow exports when an administrator enables them.

Anthropic’s Claude chat search and memory page says incognito chats on Team and Enterprise accounts are included in standard data exports and follow organizational retention policies. That documents particular plan behavior, but it does not provide a consumer-plan export inventory or specify an export file format.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains data processing while signed in and points signed-out use to the Google Privacy Policy. The passages read do not document an export file, plan eligibility, or a route for re-importing an exported archive.

Export controls and model-training controls are separate. OpenAI’s data controls page says turning off Improve the Model for Everyone prevents new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, but it does not delete or hide saved chats. Anthropic’s model-training page says chats and coding sessions are used to improve Claude when the user allows it, while incognito chats are excluded from model improvement. Conversations flagged for safety review may also be used or analyzed. None of those settings establishes what a data export contains.

The accuracy guidance also matters if an assistant transforms exported material. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading outputs and may sound confident when wrong, so important information needs verification. Anthropic’s accuracy guidance says Claude can make statements that look authoritative without being grounded in fact and should not be your only source of truth. Google’s Gemini policy guidelines say Gemini should not produce factually inaccurate outputs that could cause significant real-world harm and that context matters when applying the guidelines. These cautions do not guarantee that an export or conversion will be accurate.

For sensitive records, OpenAI’s usage policies prohibit unauthorized aggregation or distribution of individuals’ private or sensitive information. Anthropic’s Usage Policy requires qualified professional review for covered advice, recommendations, and subjective decisions before dissemination or finalization. These rules govern use of exported material; they do not certify export fidelity.

What the documentation cannot tell you

The pages do not provide a shared export specification for all three assistants. They do not establish a common list of included items such as attachments, generated files, voice data, memories, source links, titles, timestamps, or tool records. They also do not let you compare file formats, folder structures, re-import support, metadata preservation, or the amount of context an assistant can recover after migration.

Your own trial must therefore answer those questions. A large context window or a published usage limit is not evidence that an export includes every record. The previous version’s statistics and test results had no sources; they have been removed.

How to check it yourself

Use the same non-sensitive material in each service. For every check, record what you supplied, what you observed, and what the interface asked you to do.

  1. Check availability and format breadth. Give each assistant this prompt: “Create a customer-support handoff with four labeled fields: Customer, Status, Issue, Next action. Customer: sample customer; Status: open; Issue: delayed delivery; Next action: send a tracking update.” Then look for an account export control. Write down the eligible plan, exact steps, warnings, file formats, extensions, and folder names. If no export route appears, record that; do not substitute an assistant-generated summary for an account export.

  2. Check completeness and metadata. In the same conversation, use this prompt: “Prepare a project update while preserving the heading, status, table, code text, and source line exactly. Heading: Atlas status; Status: blocked; Table owner: Support team; Table task: Confirm launch date; Code text: status-check; Source: OpenAI ChatGPT pricing page at https://chatgpt.com/pricing/.” After requesting an available export, inspect it for the prompt, response, heading, table, code text, source line, title, and timestamp. Write down each item as present, missing, altered, or unreadable.

  3. Check import and migration. Try the smallest sanitized export copy through each service’s documented upload or import controls. Where an import works, give the assistant: “List every field and message you can read from the imported customer-support handoff. Mark unavailable information instead of inferring it.” Look for warnings, duplicate content, missing fields, and conversion steps. Record the accepted format and whether the imported conversation remains identifiable.

  4. Check round-trip accuracy. Give each assistant this fixed instruction: “Return only four labeled lines: Customer, Status, Issue, Next action. Customer: sample customer; Status: open; Issue: delayed delivery; Next action: send a tracking update.” Compare every line with the source before making corrections. Write down substitutions, additions, omissions, and formatting changes rather than reporting an overall impression.

Which rows of the comparison matter

In the Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison matrix, start with Free plan, Low-cost tier, Main paid plan, Team plan, How usage limits are described, and Training on your chats. The plan rows identify the account tier to verify; the usage and training rows help you understand handling conditions, but they do not prove export completeness.

Treat every “Not verified” blank as missing information, not as evidence that a feature is absent. Each published figure carries its vendor source and read date, and you should confirm current details on the vendor page before subscribing. Chat Picker’s method page explains how it handles figures it cannot verify.
