Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: Multimodal Inputs

Vendor pages document different image, file, voice, and upload limits, but they do not establish which assistant will handle your multimodal task best.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

For claude vs chatgpt vs gemini multimodal inputs, the vendors’ own file pages document different supported media and limits: OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ, Anthropic’s upload-files guide, and Google’s Gemini file-upload guide. Those pages do not settle the quality of the resulting answers, and Chat Picker has not tested the assistants for this use.

What the vendors document

Unless stated otherwise, every vendor figure below is as read on its linked page in October 2026.

Files and visual inputs. OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ says Free and paid plans can upload files, subject to account and plan limits. It lists 20 MB per image, 512 MB per file, and 3 uploads per day on Free. OpenAI’s data-analysis guidance also includes images containing values that need analysis.

Anthropic’s upload guide lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP images, while its vision documentation says multiple images can be analyzed jointly. Claude chat uploads are capped at 500 MB per file and Project files at 30 MB. Anthropic says PDFs of 100 pages or fewer receive text and visual analysis, while PDFs from 101 to 1000 pages are processed as text only.

Google’s file-upload guide accepts documents, spreadsheets, notebooks, photos, and videos. A prompt can contain up to 10 supported files; each video can be up to 2 GB and each other file up to 100 MB. Google AI Pro and Ultra extend the total audio and video upload lengths. Separately, Google’s image-generation page documents image generation and editing, subject to account, age, language, and country conditions.

Plans, prices, and data. Each vendor offers a free plan, but its included media access differs: OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini. Claude voice mode is a beta feature for all Claude plans and carries context when switching between text and voice. ChatGPT Voice can handle text and images in one chat but does not support video or screen sharing; available options depend on the plan and account. At the reading date, Gemini Live required Android and was unavailable in the Gemini web app and Google Messages.

The listed main paid prices were $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus, $20 monthly or $17 per month with annual billing and $200 upfront for Claude Pro, and $19.99 per month for Google AI Pro. These prices alone do not establish cost efficiency because included usage and media limits differ.

For training on chats, OpenAI offers an opt-out on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. Anthropic offers an opt-out on Free, Pro, and Max and says Team is not trained on by default. The Gemini plans page read did not state a chat-training setting.

Accuracy and use policies.

These warnings are not output guarantees. For medical, legal, or financial tasks, OpenAI’s usage policies call for appropriate professional involvement in licensed advice, while Anthropic’s policy requires qualified human review for covered advice and decisions. OpenAI also prohibits using someone’s photorealistic image or voice without consent in ways that could confuse authenticity.

What the documentation cannot tell you

Vendor pages establish formats, availability, and limits, but not whether an assistant reads small print correctly, preserves details through an image edit, handles an accent accurately, or completes a chain of image, document, audio, and tool tasks without losing information.

The voice pages do not provide a common transcription sample or accuracy standard. Google documents image generation and editing, but the reviewed OpenAI and Anthropic pages do not provide matching capability details, so this page does not settle feature parity. Your own authorized files, acceptance criteria, and review process are still needed for quality, latency, reliability, tool success, and cost per completed task. The older page’s unsourced statistics and results are not reused.

How to check it yourself

  1. Visual question answering. Use an image you own containing a title, labels, and a chart. Ask: “Transcribe every visible label, explain what the chart shows, and identify the image region supporting each value.” Record omissions, substitutions, unclear wording, and whether a follow-up can use the same image correctly.

  2. Image generation or editing. Attach a simple product photo. Ask: “Replace the background with a plain white studio setting while keeping the package shape, label, and colors unchanged.” Record whether the editing control exists, which instructions were followed, and any altered text, shapes, or colors. If it is unavailable, record that interface state rather than treating it as an accuracy result.

  3. Audio transcription and understanding. Use a clip you recorded or are authorized to use, keeping the original script. Ask: “Transcribe this audio, mark uncertain words, and answer a content question using only the recording.” Record substitutions, missing passages, unsupported claims, and whether spoken answers stayed consistent with the audio.

  4. Combined multimodal tasks. Attach an image, a short PDF, and the authorized audio clip. Ask: “State what evidence each input contributes, identify contradictions among them, and give the conclusion supported by the evidence.” Record dropped inputs, ignored constraints, invented details, and any point where you had to simplify the task.

  5. Prompting and connected tools. Connect a permitted document source. Ask: “Use the connected document to state its title, quote the sentence supporting your answer, and say when the document does not contain the answer.” Record whether the tool ran, which source appeared, whether the quotation was exact, and whether the assistant invented support.

  6. Price and limit fit. Before uploading material, record your plan, displayed billing period, price, file-size cap, per-prompt limit, and usage wording from the vendor account page. Stay within those limits. Record blocked uploads and warnings, but do not annualize prices or calculate cost per task unless the vendor supplies that figure.

Which Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini rows matter

In the three-way comparison matrix, start with Free plan, Main paid plan, Heavy-use plans, Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, and Training on your chats. Then check the linked vendor pages for image formats, file sizes, audio and video duration, voice availability, and connected-tool rules.

The matrix marks figures it could not confirm as “Not verified.” Because plans and prices change, confirm any figure on the vendor page before subscribing or designing a recurring workflow around it.
