Claude vs ChatGPT vs Perplexity for Research
Compares documented research workflows, costs, limits, and accuracy cautions across Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity without claiming a tested winner.

For research, OpenAI's Deep Research help page and Anthropic's Research help page describe dedicated research workflows. For a claude vs chatgpt research decision, those pages settle documented features, limits, data controls, and accuracy cautions, but not which assistant is best; Perplexity's consumer help pages could not be read, so this page uses only its API pricing documentation. Chat Picker's method says the site has not tested, measured, scored, surveyed, benchmarked, or ranked the assistants for this use.
What the vendors document
ChatGPT. As read on October 1, 2026, OpenAI's Deep Research help page says ChatGPT can use uploaded files, the public web or selected sites, and enabled apps. You can edit the plan, monitor or stop research, change accessible sources, and receive citations or source links in completed outputs. A fixed monthly allowance resets 30 days after first use, while exact usage varies by plan. Normal ChatGPT data controls apply, and deleting the chat deletes associated research outputs under its retention policy.
OpenAI's web-search page says results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Its accuracy note calls ChatGPT a first draft, not a final source. As read on October 1, 2026, the ChatGPT Plus page lists $20 per month and says API use is separate. The ChatGPT pricing page lists training opt-outs for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. It also lists app context windows as 27K (Free), 54K (Go and Plus), and 128K (Pro) for instant models; reasoning-model windows are 256K (Go and Plus) and 400K (Pro).
Claude. Anthropic's Research help page says Research requires web search, runs multiple searches, and can use connected Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs alongside the web. It is available to paid Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users, follows standard conversation limits, and may use those limits faster. Anthropic's web-search page says responses include citations and advises cross-referencing them. Its incorrect-response notice says not to treat Claude as your only source of truth.
Anthropic's Pro Help page lists $20 per month in the US, while its pricing page showed $34 month to month or $28 per month with annual billing, as read on October 1, 2026. Because the official pages differ, check your location and checkout page. The pricing page also lists context windows up to 1 million tokens on every plan, varying by model, and training opt-outs for Free, Pro, and Max; it says Team is not trained on by default.
Gemini. Google's Deep Research help page says the feature can conduct real-time research, includes Google Search by default, accepts files and NotebookLM notebooks, and can add personal Gmail or Drive sources. Gemini creates a research plan that you can update before the report. Google's source-viewing page says the Sources panel may contain public websites, uploaded files, and connected Workspace documents or email, but it does not say those links verify the surrounding claims.
As read on October 1, 2026, Google's limits page says usage depends on prompt complexity, models, features, and chat length, then refreshes every five hours until the weekly limit. It lists context windows of 32k tokens without an AI plan, 128k on AI Plus, and 1 million on AI Pro and Ultra. The U.S. plans page lists AI Pro at $19.99 per month with four times Free's app usage; Ultra costs $99.99 with five times AI Pro limits or $199.99 with twenty times. The plans page does not settle a plan-level training setting, so leave that item unverified.
Perplexity. Its consumer help pages could not be read, so this page makes no consumer plan, privacy, or accuracy claim. As read on October 1, 2026, the Perplexity API pricing page lists Search API usage at $5 per 1,000 successful requests, including up to five queries per request, with no token charge. A successful response is billed even without results. Router and Agent usage uses the selected model's token rates, and tool costs are separate.
What the documentation cannot tell you
The documentation cannot show whether a citation supports the adjacent claim, a long file was used fully, a current search is complete, or a calculation and code block are correct. It cannot turn a plan price into cost per usable result. Your trial can expose workflow-specific problems, but it cannot establish a universal winner. Under Chat Picker's method, leave unconfirmed comparison cells blank.
How to check it yourself
-
Citation fit. Give: “Find five peer-reviewed papers from 2022 through 2025 evaluating retrieval-augmented generation. For each, provide a DOI or publisher link and the exact supporting passage for a one-sentence summary.” Check metadata and whether each passage supports the summary. Write down the link, support status, and any correction.
-
Long documents. Upload five related papers. Give: “Read all five. Tabulate datasets, methods, sample sizes, and limitations; identify three disagreements with page citations.” Look for full-document coverage and unsupported locators. Record missing sections and mismatches.
-
Current literature. Give: “Find peer-reviewed papers or official reports published in the last 30 days about citation errors in AI assistants. Show publication date, source type, and link; label preprints separately.” Open each source. Write whether it meets your date and source-type rules.
-
Math and code. Give: “Use only an attached table with paired results for Method A and Method B. Calculate the difference and unweighted mean, show the formulas, and provide Python that reproduces both.” Recalculate the arithmetic and inspect the code. Record every mismatch or unstated assumption.
-
Cost. Attach the same five papers to each eligible assistant. Give: “Write a 500-word comparison of the methods, datasets, and limitations.” Record the displayed checkout price, any limit reached, extra charges, and interruptions. For Perplexity, use the API pricing page to calculate search and tool charges; do not invent a consumer-plan row.
-
Privacy. Use only a synthetic file. Give: “Summarize the attached synthetic grant report and list every factual claim that needs verification.” Before and after the run, record training controls, retention settings, connected sources, and deletion confirmation. If a control is not stated, write “not documented.” The Perplexity API pricing page does not settle consumer settings.
Which rows of the comparison matter for claude vs chatgpt
In the Claude vs ChatGPT matrix, start with the Free, low-cost, main paid, heavy-use, and team rows. Then check billing terms, context window, usage limits, and training on chats. Use the same row definitions in the Gemini vs ChatGPT matrix. Perplexity's API rates belong in a separate API-cost comparison, not a consumer-plan row.
