Staying or Switching AI Assistants: What to Check Before You Renew

Main individual paid tiers read in October 2026 were $20 for ChatGPT Plus, $20 for Claude Pro in the US, and $19.99 for Google AI Pro, but renewal decisions also require checking limits, data controls, exports, and cancellation terms.

Before you renew, check the vendors’ pages for plan prices, included features, usage limits, data controls, support routes, and any documented export or cancellation terms. Those pages document policy and packaging, but they cannot tell you whether an assistant will handle your actual work, tools, and risk level well. Chat Picker has not tested ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, so this guide compares documented differences and gives you a practical trial rather than naming a winner.

What the vendors document

As read on October 1, 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus page lists Plus at $20 per month; API use is separate, and caps can vary with system conditions. Anthropic’s Claude Pro page lists Pro at $20 per month in the US, annual billing, five-hour session resets, and a weekly limit. Google’s US AI plans page lists AI Plus at $4.99 per month, AI Pro at $19.99 per month, and Ultra at $99.99 per month or $199.99 per month; limits refresh every five hours until a weekly cap. OpenAI’s Pro tier page adds $100, $200, and $500 monthly tiers.

Feature lists also differ. OpenAI’s Plus page includes voice, image generation, uploads and analysis, and Deep Research where available. Anthropic’s pricing page lists Code, Design, Slides, Docs, projects, and Microsoft 365 access on Pro. Google’s plan page lists video generation and Daily Brief on Plus and Pro, plus 5 TB of storage on Pro.

For data controls, OpenAI’s data controls page says signed-in personal users can request a data copy or delete their account, turn off model improvement, and use temporary chats that are not used for training but may be retained for 30 days for safety. Anthropic’s model-training page says chats and coding sessions are used when the user allows it, while incognito chats are not; it also says conversations flagged for safety review may be analyzed to improve safeguards. Claude’s pricing page says Team is not trained on by default.

The Gemini plans page and Gemini Privacy Hub read do not state a comparable plan-specific training switch. Check the controls available in your current account rather than assuming one exists.

For accuracy checks, OpenAI’s accuracy note says ChatGPT can sound confident while wrong and important information should be verified. Claude’s accuracy note says not to rely on Claude as the only source and to inspect original sources. Gemini’s sources page says a Sources button appears when available and may include public sites, uploads, or connected Workspace documents and email. Treat source display as something to inspect, not an accuracy guarantee.

For support, OpenAI Support starts with a virtual assistant in help-site chat and may bring in a human if needed; the OpenAI Developer Community says it is not for ChatGPT app discussion. Claude’s support page says support is asynchronous, available in writing through the messenger or email, with no phone support and response times varying by plan and severity. The Gemini Apps Community publishes guides and videos. These pages describe channels, not resolution quality.

For exit planning, Claude’s export page lets individual Free, Pro, and Max users export data. Its download link expires after 24 hours, and exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account.

OpenAI’s cancellation page routes Apple and Google Play purchases through those stores and direct purchases through the ChatGPT account. It says cancellation stops renewals but does not automatically refund prior charges. After ordinary cancellation, paid features remain through the current period, while a granted refund normally ends covered access earlier, subject to applicable law. OpenAI also advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next period’s charge. The vendor pages read do not settle Gemini export or cancellation terms, or Claude cancellation terms.

What the documentation cannot tell you

Documentation describes packaging, not task fit. It does not tell you whether an answer will work on your files, how often a limit will matter, whether a format will fit your process, or how support will handle your issue.

There are no surveys, reviews, or user data behind this page. Earlier unsourced statistics and test results were removed. A controlled trial supplies evidence for your case without turning it into a general claim about the assistant.

How to check it yourself

  1. Accuracy baseline: Give each assistant the same source-backed task. A complete starter prompt is: “Check the statement ‘ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month.’ Use an official OpenAI source, quote the billing conditions, and state the page date you read.” Then repeat a non-sensitive task for which you already have a trusted answer. Check calculations, unsupported additions, citations, and false certainty. Write down each error and correction; do not generalize beyond the task.

  2. Workflow fit: Save this text in a plain-text file: “The supplier moved the delivery. The invoice names the old date, but the customer has not confirmed a new date.” Ask: “Turn this into three customer-facing bullets, preserve the uncertainty, and flag what must be confirmed.” Look for file handling, formatting, citations, and handoff quality. Record manual repairs and any capability missing from your plan.

  3. Renewal cost: Ask: “Using official vendor sources, list current price steps, included usage, billing cadence, overage options, renewal terms, and cancellation routes; link each item and state the page date.” Open every link. Record currency, monthly or annual charging, annual prepayment, limit wording, reset schedule, and cancellation deadline.

  4. Privacy and portability: With a fake project, inspect settings before adding real files. Ask: “Which training, retention, memory, and export controls apply to my exact plan and region? Cite official sources and separate documented facts from unknowns.” Verify each control, request an export where available, open the file, and record opt-outs, warnings, export format, and controlling role.

  5. Onboarding: Use a clean account and this prompt: “Summarize this brief: ‘The team approved the draft. The owner is not recorded. The vendor has not confirmed the final price.’ Return scope, owner, status, and open question; do not fill gaps by guessing.” Find the limits, required settings, file and tool controls, support route, and exit path. Record blocked steps, unclear terms, and what appears before commitment.

Which rows of the comparison matter

Open the three-way comparison matrix. Focus on the rows labeled Free plan, Low-cost tier, Main paid plan, Heavy-use plans, Team plan, Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, Training on your chats, and Ads.

A blank marked Not verified means unresolved, not evidence of no feature, limit, or cost. Each figure carries its vendor source and read date; the method page explains that process. Follow the vendor links for support, export, and cancellation, then confirm current terms before subscribing.
