Best AI Chatbot: Features and Documented Limits

Vendor documentation can compare plan features, limits, data controls, and support, but it cannot establish a universal best choice without a controlled trial.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

For the best AI chatbot question, the vendors’ own pages document the practical terms: plan features, prices, usage limits, data controls, support, and accuracy cautions. They cannot establish a universal best choice. Chat Picker has not tested ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for quality, speed, accuracy, reliability, or benchmark performance, and this page uses no user ratings or survey data.

The previous version’s unsourced statistics and test results have been removed.

What the vendors document

As read on October 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus help page lists Plus at $20 per month; it was checked October 1, 2026. OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page did not provide a verified US-dollar price for Go, while OpenAI’s Pro tiers page lists Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 at $100, $200, and $500 per month; both pages were checked October 1, 2026.

Google’s US AI plans page, checked October 1, 2026, lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month with 2 times Free usage and 400 GB of storage; AI Pro at $19.99 with 4 times Free usage and 5 TB; and Ultra at $99.99 for 5 times AI Pro limits or $199.99 for 20 times those limits. The reviewed Claude pricing page and Claude Pro help page, both checked October 1, 2026, give conflicting Pro dollar figures. This page therefore does not mark a Claude Pro or Max price as verified; check the live pricing page before subscribing.

OpenAI’s Free tier FAQ says everyday text chats are unlimited subject to safeguards, while uploads, images, voice, and data analysis have separate limits. Its Plus documentation says access is broader, but message caps can vary with system conditions. Anthropic says Claude Free includes web search, file creation, and code execution; Claude Pro usage varies with message, file, and conversation length, resets every five hours, and is also subject to a weekly limit. Max offers 5 or 20 times Pro usage.

Google’s Gemini Apps limits help page says limits depend on prompt complexity, models, features, and chat length. They refresh every five hours until the weekly limit is reached, and AI credits can extend them. These linked plan and limit pages were checked October 1, 2026.

For data handling, OpenAI’s data controls let signed-in users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro turn off eligible use of chats for model improvement. Temporary chats are not used to improve models and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Anthropic’s model-training privacy page lists an opt-out for Claude Free, Pro, and Max and says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains Google’s processing, but the pages reviewed do not establish a plan-by-plan model-training opt-out. Google’s personalization help page says personalization can use past Gemini chats and content from certain connected Google apps where available. The linked privacy pages were checked October 1, 2026.

On accuracy, OpenAI’s truth guidance says ChatGPT may be incorrect or confidently wrong and tells users to verify quotations, data, technical information, and references. Anthropic’s accuracy guidance warns against relying on Claude as the only source and recommends checking original cited pages. Google’s source documentation says a Sources panel may contain public websites, uploaded files, connected documents, or email; it does not say that displaying a source verifies every statement. All three pages were checked October 1, 2026.

Support routes also differ. OpenAI Support starts with a virtual assistant, although a human agent may join. The OpenAI Developer Community is not a venue for ChatGPT app discussion. Claude Support is provided in writing through its messenger and email, without phone or live-chat support; Team escalation can go through an owner or administrator. The Gemini Apps Community contains guides and announcements, while Google’s related help page says Google One members can get help from a support expert. These pages were checked October 1, 2026.

OpenAI’s data controls let signed-in personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users request a data copy. Claude’s export documentation lets individual Free, Pro, and Max users export their data. For Team and Enterprise, only the Primary Owner can request an export; the download link expires 24 hours after delivery, and exported data cannot be imported into another personal account. The Gemini pages reviewed do not settle a personal export procedure. The linked export pages were checked October 1, 2026.

For cancellation, OpenAI’s subscription guidance says cancellation stops future renewals but does not automatically refund previous charges. A granted refund normally ends covered access earlier, subject to applicable law. Canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date avoids the next period’s charge; uninstalling does not cancel, and store-billed subscriptions must be handled through Apple or Google. The Gemini documentation reviewed does not settle a cancellation procedure. The linked pages were checked October 1, 2026.

What the documentation cannot tell you

For a best AI chatbot choice, a feature list cannot show whether an answer follows your instructions, handles your document correctly, grounds a claim, or arrives within an acceptable delay. It also cannot predict how a particular workload will fit variable usage caps or what a plan will cost after upgrades or usage credits.

A controlled trial should hold the task, document, and evaluation criteria constant. Record access blocks, missed instructions, unsupported claims, and limit notices. One exchange does not establish general performance.

How to check it yourself

  1. Streaming and instruction following. Give each available assistant: “Create a five-bullet summary of the attached project brief, preserve every date and amount, and cite page numbers.” Record time to first visible output, total completion time, missed constraints, and unsupported statements.

  2. Long-document context. Attach the same relevant report and ask: “From the attached report, explain what changed in operating margin, cite the page for each figure, and identify any requested figure the report does not contain.” Record whether citations support the answers, conflicts are noticed, and missing information is acknowledged.

  3. Code generation. Use this prompt: “Review this Python function, preserve its signature, identify defects, and return corrected code with tests: def average(values): return sum(values) / len(values)” Record defects found, test coverage, whether the code runs, and any execution limit.

  4. Current claims and sources. Use this prompt: “Using only official OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google pages, find the current paid individual plan prices and usage policies for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Google AI Pro. Quote each statement, link the exact page, give its displayed date, and say when a date is absent.” Record broken links, unsupported claims, and unclear monthly, annual, or regional terms.

  5. Multimodal input. Attach a readable invoice and ask: “Read this image. State the invoice date, total, and payment due date, and label any field you cannot read.” Repeat with a document or audio relevant to your work. Record accepted formats, stated size limits, missing fields, invented values, and location references.

  6. Limits and account controls. Ask: “List every usage limit, included feature, export control, renewal rule, cancellation route, and support option shown for my plan. Link each official policy page and say when a value is not displayed.” Check the answers against checkout and account pages, using non-sensitive test data. Record the plan, billing channel, visible cap, reset rule, export destination, cancellation deadline, refund wording, and support route.
