AI Voice Chat Free: Features and Limits
AI Voice Chat Free options differ in documented limits and device access, while most vendor pages do not specify voice-audio or transcript retention.
If you want AI Voice Chat Free, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini document voice access on their free plans, but their allowances and device coverage differ. Grok says it is free to try and separately lists voice conversations, without stating a free voice allowance. Gemini Live requires the Gemini mobile app or device assistant and is unavailable in the Gemini web app.
Chat Picker has not tested, measured, scored, or ranked the assistants. The vendor facts and figures below were read from the linked pages on October 1, 2026. For wider context, see our free-plan comparison, app comparison, and ChatGPT vs. Gemini voice and multimodal comparison.
AI Voice Chat Free, Compared
ChatGPT. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice Help page gives Free users limited access to GPT-Live-1 mini and warns that the limits may change. As read in October 2026, OpenAI publishes no minute or message allowance for Free. Voice in Chat runs on the web, iOS, and Android. ChatGPT also has desktop apps for macOS and Windows, but the Voice page does not clearly place Live voice inside those desktop apps.
OpenAI says Live does not support video or screen sharing. Availability can also depend on the plan, workspace settings, region, app version, and parental controls. Although OpenAI’s account help page describes logged-out ChatGPT use in supported countries, it does not confirm that Voice is available without signing in.
Claude. Anthropic’s voice mode page describes Voice as a beta feature available on Free, as well as the listed paid plans. It works through Claude Mobile on iOS and Android, Claude Desktop, and the web, although Anthropic says it is designed to work best from a phone.
Claude Voice conversations count toward the regular usage limits for the user’s plan. Anthropic does not state a separate numeric voice allowance for Free. You must sign in to a Claude account. The page does not say whether Voice supports video or screen sharing, so that point remains unsettled.
Gemini. Google’s AI plans page lists Gemini Live on the Free plan. It describes broader Gemini usage through compute-based limits that refresh every five hours, up to a weekly limit, but does not give Live a separate allowance in minutes or messages.
According to Google’s Gemini Live Help page, Gemini Live runs through the Gemini mobile app or as the device’s mobile assistant. Google lists the Gemini app for Android and iOS, while the detailed Live requirements specify an Android phone or tablet and the latest version of the Google App. You also need to be signed in to Gemini Apps with a personal, work, or school Google account and meet the applicable age requirement.
Gemini Live supports video streaming and screen sharing. It is not currently available in the Gemini web app or through Gemini in Google Messages.
Grok. xAI’s Grok product page lists voice conversations on the web, iOS, and Android. It says Grok is free to try and that users sign in with an X or email account, but it does not attach a specific free voice allowance to that access.
No desktop version is listed on the page read. The page also does not state supported voice languages, video or screen-sharing support, or how voice audio and transcripts are retained.
Languages Are Not Fully Specified
The ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok pages read do not provide complete supported-language lists for voice conversations. You therefore should not treat English-only support—or broad multilingual support—as documented from those pages.
Google’s Gemini Live page specifically says that the Gemini mobile app does not currently support Farsi. That is an app-level exclusion, not a complete account of which languages Gemini Live can understand or speak, so the broader language picture remains unspecified.
Audio and Transcript Retention
The vendor voice pages do not establish whether raw voice audio is stored, whether a transcript is created, or how long either is retained. A free voice allowance should not be read as a no-storage promise.
OpenAI’s Data Controls in ChatGPT provides one retention figure, but it is not voice-specific. OpenAI says temporary chats do not appear in chat history, are not used to improve its models, and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. The page also says signed-out ChatGPT conversations are not saved. Neither statement confirms how voice recordings or voice transcripts are handled.
The Claude, Gemini Live, and Grok pages read do not specify retention periods for voice audio or transcripts. Check the current vendor privacy and account pages before using Voice for sensitive conversations.
Which Free Voice Mode Fits You
ChatGPT’s documented free Voice access suits readers who mainly want web or mobile access and accept a limited allowance without Live video or screen sharing. It may suit you less if you need a published voice cap or a confirmed logged-out voice experience.
Claude offers the broadest documented platform coverage in this comparison: mobile, desktop, and web. Its trade-offs are that Voice remains labeled beta, counts toward regular plan usage, and has no separately stated free numeric allowance.
Gemini Live fits readers who want free-plan voice with video streaming and screen sharing. Mobile access is essential, however, because Google does not make Live available in the Gemini web app.
Grok may fit readers who want voice on the web or mobile and are comfortable with an undocumented allowance. Its listed pages leave the free cap, supported languages, visual features, and retention treatment unresolved.
Before relying on any option, confirm its current availability on the vendor page. Chat Picker records the published source and reading date but does not claim hands-on results or a universal winner.
