Best AI Chatbot: A Beginner's Checklist

A beginner's checklist for the best AI chatbot, showing that ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini list different combinations of free tools, research, voice, media access, and plan limits.

If you are searching for the best AI chatbot, start with the rows you need: writing, research, voice, images and files, account and privacy, and price. For ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, the OpenAI pricing page, Claude plans page and Google AI plans page document different feature mixes and limits, so “best” depends on the row you require. Chat Picker has not tested quality, speed, accuracy, reliability or benchmarks; its method uses vendor-published facts, records when each figure was read, and leaves unconfirmed figures blank.

Choosing the best AI chatbot: follow the rows

Use the Claude vs ChatGPT matrix, Gemini vs ChatGPT matrix and Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini matrix to check the documented rows side by side. If a cell is blank, Chat Picker marks the figure “Not verified”; follow the vendor link before making a decision.

Writing and everyday chat

  • ChatGPT: As read in October 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna on Free, with limited uploads, images, voice and Deep Research (read October 1, 2026).
  • Claude: Anthropic’s plans page lists chat on web, desktop and mobile, plus web search, file creation, code execution and memory on Free (read October 1, 2026).
  • Gemini: Google’s AI plans page requires a Google Account for Free and lists access to 3.6 Flash, varying access to 3.1 Pro, and 15 GB of storage (read October 1, 2026).

Use the writing row when everyday text and the listed free tools matter. It cannot tell you which assistant writes most accurately.

Research and current information

  • ChatGPT: Deep Research is limited on Free, expanded on Plus and maximum on Pro, according to OpenAI’s pricing page (read October 1, 2026).
  • Claude: Anthropic lists Research as unavailable on Free and included from Pro on its pricing page (read October 1, 2026).
  • Gemini: Google lists Deep Research on the Free plan on Google AI plans (read October 1, 2026).
  • Grok: xAI’s Grok page lists live web and X search with citations and a multi-agent mode; it states no per-plan limits (read October 1, 2026).

Use this row when you need current, source-linked work. It documents feature access, not guaranteed accuracy.

Voice and conversation mode

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI lists limited voice on Free and more on Go on its pricing page. ChatGPT Voice says Live does not support video or screen sharing (pages read October 1, 2026).
  • Claude: Anthropic lists voice on every plan. Its voice guide says the beta works on iOS, Android, desktop and web, and voice use counts against regular usage limits (pages read October 1, 2026).
  • Gemini: Google lists Gemini Live on Free. Its voice guide says the mode needs the mobile app and a signed-in Google Account, supports video streaming and screen sharing, and is unavailable in the Gemini web app (pages read October 1, 2026).
  • Grok: xAI lists voice on web, iOS and Android, with no limits stated; SuperGrok lists longer voice conversations (Grok page, plans page, read October 1, 2026).

Choose by device and whether you need voice only, video streaming or screen sharing.

Images and files

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI lists limited image generation on Free, more on Go, and unlimited and faster generation on Pro. Its upload FAQ lists 512 MB per file, text and document files capped at 2M tokens, images at 20 MB each, and 3 uploads a day for Free users (pricing page, read October 1, 2026).
  • Claude: Anthropic’s pricing page does not list image generation, so Chat Picker leaves that row unverified. Its upload guide lists 500 MB per file in chat, 30 MB per file in a project, image-and-chart PDF reading up to 100 pages, and text-only PDF reading from 101 to 1,000 pages (read October 1, 2026).
  • Gemini: Google lists image generation and editing on Free and video generation on paid plans. Its upload guide lists up to 10 files per prompt and 100 MB per file, with paid plans raising upload limits (Google AI plans, read October 1, 2026).
  • Grok: xAI lists image and video creation as a trial on Lite; SuperGrok lists HD 720p, 30-second video (Grok plans, read October 1, 2026).

Use the media row when files or visual generation are regular parts of your work, not occasional extras.

Account and privacy

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI says logged-out access, where offered, allows one conversation at a time and does not save chat history (home-page help, read October 1, 2026). Its pricing page lists a training opt-out for Free, Go, Plus and Pro (read October 1, 2026).
  • Claude: Anthropic describes signing in with Google or an emailed link and does not describe a logged-out mode (login help, read October 1, 2026). Its pricing page lists a training opt-out for Free, Pro and Max, while Team is not trained on by default (read October 1, 2026).
  • Gemini: Google says some web features work without signing in, while more features and saved activity require a Google Account (sign-in help, read October 1, 2026). The Google AI plans page links to data-handling information but states no chat-training setting, so Chat Picker marks that row unverified (read October 1, 2026).

Read account access and privacy as separate rows: being able to start without signing in does not tell you how chats are handled.

Price and limits

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month, billed monthly (Plus help, read October 1, 2026). The company’s Go help article gives no price and points readers to the pricing page, so Chat Picker has no verified US-dollar Go figure. OpenAI’s pricing page describes relative limits rather than exact message counts (pages read October 1, 2026).
  • Claude: Anthropic’s pricing page lists Pro at $34 month-to-month or $28 per month with annual billing, with $340 up front, while its Pro help article lists $20 per month in the US; both pages were read October 1, 2026. The vendor texts do not settle the current Pro amount, so check the live page before paying. The pricing page also says there is no fixed message count because capacity varies with conversation length and complexity, model choice and feature use.
  • Gemini: Google lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month with 2x Free usage and Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month with 4x Free usage (Google AI plans, read October 1, 2026). Its limits help says limits refresh every 5 hours until the weekly limit is reached (read October 1, 2026).

Chat Picker’s method says vendors show different prices by country and plans change. Open the vendor page before subscribing.

Make your own shortlist

Run the same complete prompt across the candidates: “Compare the current Free plans for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, cite each pricing page, list the tools missing from each plan, and mark any price or limit that is not published.” Then keep only the rows that affect your work, check account and privacy settings, and confirm the live vendor price. The best fit is the assistant whose documented plan matches your required rows; Chat Picker cannot name a quality winner because it has not run assistant tests.
