Claude vs ChatGPT for Architectural Knowledge
Vendor documentation clarifies plan, file, data, and accuracy limits for Claude versus ChatGPT, but it does not establish which is better for architectural knowledge.

For this claude vs chatgpt comparison, vendor pages settle the practical baseline for architectural knowledge: plan access, file limits, data choices, and the need to verify claims. They do not establish which assistant gives better architectural analysis, and Chat Picker has not tested the assistants for that use. The previous version’s unsourced statistics and test results have been removed.
What the vendors document: Claude vs ChatGPT
The useful distinction is documented access versus answer quality. The figures below are as read on October 1, 2026. OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month, while Anthropic’s Claude pricing page lists Claude Pro at $20 monthly or $17 per month with annual billing, with $200 up front. OpenAI lists unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna on Free, but limited uploads, images, voice and deep research. Anthropic lists web search, file creation, code execution and memory on Claude Free.
For data choices, OpenAI says an opt-out from training on chats is available on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Anthropic says the opt-out applies to Free, Pro and Max, while Team is not trained on by default. These are chat-training settings, not a complete retention comparison for uploaded drawings or reference documents.
OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ says each file uploaded to a ChatGPT conversation has a hard limit of 512MB. Text and document files are capped at 2M tokens per file, although that cap does not apply to spreadsheets, and Free users are limited to three file uploads per day. Anthropic’s upload-files help page gives a 500MB limit for chat uploads and 30MB for project files, with additional token limits possible. Claude analyzes text and visual elements in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer; for PDFs from 101 to 1,000 pages, it processes text only.
Accuracy needs direct scrutiny. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance says ChatGPT can be incorrect or misleading and may sound confident while wrong. It recommends treating responses as a first draft and verifying quotes, technical information and references. Anthropic’s incorrect-response guidance says Claude can produce convincing statements that are not grounded in fact and may be confused by questions about current events. Anthropic advises checking cited sources and not relying on Claude as the only source of truth.
The vendor pages used here do not document architecture-specific accuracy, plan-reading ability, building-code compliance or the reliability of architectural citations.
What the documentation cannot tell you
The documentation cannot show whether an assistant will notice a missing drawing title block, preserve dimensional relationships, distinguish evidence from design speculation, or identify an outdated code provision. It also cannot establish how consistently either assistant handles the same project across separate chats.
Those questions require your own trial using the same drawings, code excerpts, reference texts and prompt wording. A fluent answer still needs checking against drawings, authoritative sources and a qualified reviewer.
How to check it yourself
-
Structural logic and spatial syntax. Give both assistants the same floor-plan excerpt. Use this prompt: “Analyze circulation, spatial hierarchy and visible structural organization in this floor plan. Separate direct observations from inferences, identify missing information and do not infer code compliance.” Look for clear separation between what is shown and what is assumed. Record unsupported leaps, overlooked constraints and unclear references.
-
Style identification. Provide the same drawing and dated museum catalog extract to each assistant. Ask: “Compare this drawing with the attached catalog description. Identify features that support or conflict with its period attribution, quote the relevant source lines and label the stylistic conclusion as an inference.” Look for specific visual evidence rather than a period label alone. Record unsupported claims and conflicting evidence.
-
Building-code interpretation. Supply a drawing and relevant code excerpts. Ask: “Using only the attached code excerpts and drawing, list provisions that could be relevant to egress from the marked floor. Quote exact section numbers, state the jurisdiction and edition, separate text from interpretation and do not certify compliance.” Check every section number and quotation against the source. Record missing jurisdiction, invented provisions and answers that stretch the text.
-
Historical precedent. Give both assistants the same case-study excerpts. Ask: “Using only the attached case-study excerpts, compare how each building organizes circulation. For every claim, give the source title and page and label anything not stated as an inference.” Look for traceable evidence and meaningful distinctions between examples. Record claims without a locatable source.
-
Prompt sensitivity. Submit the same drawing with each of these framings: “Explain how this attached plan organizes movement.” “List every assumption needed for that explanation.” “What evidence in this attached plan would falsify it?” Compare the claims, omissions and level of certainty. Record whether added precision exposes assumptions or introduces new unsupported conclusions.
-
Workflow integration. Ask: “Create a design-review table from the attached architectural brief. Include columns for issue, evidence, design implication, verification needed and confidence, with page or drawing references wherever available.” Check table formatting, terminology and citation placement. Record elapsed time, manual corrections and any formatting or consistency failures you encounter.
