Claude vs ChatGPT for Geography and Map Analysis

Explains what OpenAI and Anthropic document about map files, plan limits, accuracy cautions, and why vendor pages cannot settle Claude vs ChatGPT geography performance.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

For Claude vs ChatGPT in geography and map analysis, the cited vendor pages document differences in file inputs, plan access, usage limits, and chat-data controls, but they do not publish a head-to-head geography or map result. Chat Picker has not tested either assistant for this use, so this page separates documented features from the checks you need to run yourself.

What the vendors document: Claude vs ChatGPT

As read on OpenAI's pricing page in October 2026, ChatGPT Free includes limited uploads. OpenAI's Plus page, read in October 2026, lists Plus at $20/month. As read on Anthropic's pricing page, also in October 2026, Claude Free includes web search, file creation, code execution, and memory; Pro is $20/month, or $17/month on annual billing with $200 up front; and Max starts at $100/month. Neither OpenAI's pricing page nor Anthropic's pricing page gives exact message counts.

For map inputs, OpenAI's data analysis page, read in October 2026, says ChatGPT can inspect structured data, create tables or charts, and analyze images containing values. OpenAI's File Uploads FAQ, also read in October 2026, says Free users have three file uploads per day, each uploaded file has a 512MB hard limit, images have a 20MB limit, and text or document files are capped at two million tokens per file.

Anthropic's upload-files help, read in October 2026, lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP as supported image formats. It sets a 500MB limit for chat uploads and 30MB for project files, with additional token limits possible. For PDFs of 100 pages or fewer, Claude analyzes text and visual elements such as images, charts, and graphics; for PDFs from 101 to 1000 pages, it processes text only. These feature pages do not document native handling of shapefiles, geodatabases, or visual map-layer editing.

The pricing pages also document chat-training controls. ChatGPT offers an opt-out on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro, according to OpenAI's pricing page. Claude offers an opt-out on Free, Pro, and Max, while Team is not trained on by default, according to Anthropic's pricing page. These are training choices, not a complete statement of every retention or deletion condition.

For accuracy, OpenAI's accuracy note says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading responses, may sound confident when wrong, and does not incorporate events beyond its knowledge cutoff unless tools are used. It recommends checking important information against reliable sources. Anthropic's incorrect-response note likewise says Claude can be wrong, should not be your only source of truth, and should be checked against its cited sources. Anthropic also advises opening original pages because they may contain context omitted from a response. Citations and tool access give you material to inspect; they do not prove that a capital, border, coordinate, or route is correct.

What the documentation cannot tell you

The vendor pages do not establish how either assistant reads small map labels, calculates distance, follows route logic, handles coordinate systems, or performs across different levels of question difficulty. They also do not show whether citations are authoritative enough for your purpose or whether an error rate is acceptable for your assignment.

Your files, prompts, chosen plan, and review standard determine those outcomes. The previous version's unsourced statistics and test claims have been removed.

How to check it yourself

  1. Geographic recall. Give both assistants the same map and a short reference packet you trust. Use: “Using only the attached files, identify the labeled capital cities, border crossings, rivers, and physical features. Cite the page or map label behind every answer, and mark anything the files do not establish.” Look for unsupported additions and mismatched citations. Record errors, omissions, and whether the answer follows the source restriction.

  2. Spatial reasoning. Give each assistant a map with a pair of marked locations and a visible route network. Use: “Estimate the straight-line distance between the marked locations, then compare it with the shortest visible route. Show the scale-bar calculation, state the unit, and separate measurement from inference.” Look for unit consistency, route selection, and unstated assumptions. Record both outputs and every assumption used.

  3. Map interpretation. Give each assistant a map containing a coordinate grid, contour lines, and a scale bar. Use: “Read the coordinates of the marked locations, state the coordinate format and datum printed on the map, and explain the contour interval and scale. Do not supply a coordinate format or datum that is not shown.” Look for visual grounding, uncertainty, and unsupported precision. Record every value tied to a visible map element.

  4. Consistency by difficulty. Prepare easy, intermediate, and complex versions of the same map task, then run each version in a separate conversation with the same tool settings. Use: “Solve the attached task. Separate direct observations, calculations, and assumptions, then identify any detail that prevents a definitive answer.” Look for whether structure and sourcing remain stable as difficulty rises. Record the plan, tool state, prompt version, errors, and omissions—not just the final conclusion.

Use those logs to set your shortlist. Prioritize documented file and plan fit, traceable map evidence, and an error level that matches what you can accept and verify.

Which rows of the comparison matter

The Claude vs ChatGPT comparison matrix includes the most relevant rows: Free plan, Main paid plan, Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, and Training on your chats.

Read the context-window row as a capacity figure, not evidence of geographic reasoning. Read the usage row as vendor plan language, not a measured throughput result. Check the training row against the sensitivity of your maps or reference files, and confirm current plan terms on the vendor page before subscribing.
