Claude vs ChatGPT for Mathematical Reasoning

A source-backed guide to the documented plan, context, data, and accuracy differences behind Claude vs ChatGPT for math, plus a practical test plan because vendor pages do not prove reasoning quality.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

For Claude vs ChatGPT used for mathematical reasoning, the vendors’ own pages establish documented differences in plans, context limits, data controls, and accuracy warnings, but not which assistant reasons better on your problems. Chat Picker has not tested either assistant for this use, so this page explains those boundaries and gives you a repeatable way to check them.

What the vendors document for Claude vs ChatGPT

According to OpenAI’s “What is ChatGPT Plus?” page, Plus is $20 per month, billed monthly, while Anthropic’s Claude pricing page lists Pro at $20 per month or $17 per month with annual billing, with $200 due up front. These prices are as read on the vendor pages in October 2026. A listed plan price does not document how many problems it will solve correctly.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page marks uploads, images, voice, and deep research as limited on Free. Anthropic’s Claude pricing page lists web search, file creation, code execution, and memory on Claude Free. Neither page publishes an exact message count, so the labels do not tell you how many attempts a long proof will allow.

For context, OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page lists 27K tokens for instant models on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro; for reasoning models, it lists 256K on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro. Anthropic’s Claude pricing page says context can reach 1M on every plan and varies by model. The context figures are as read on those pages in October 2026. Capacity is not evidence that an answer will be logically correct.

For data handling, OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page lists a training opt-out for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. Anthropic’s Claude pricing page lists an opt-out for Free, Pro, and Max, and says Team is not trained on by default. Read the current control before placing unpublished exercises, student work, or proprietary derivations in a chat.

OpenAI’s “Does ChatGPT tell the truth?” guidance says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading answers and may sound confident when wrong; it tells users to treat responses as a first draft and verify important information. Anthropic’s guidance on incorrect or misleading responses says Claude can occasionally produce incorrect or misleading answers, should not be the only source of truth, and merits careful checking, especially for high-stakes advice. These pages do not provide a mathematical-reasoning comparison.

For broader context, Google’s Gemini app safety and policy guidelines, read in October 2026, say that LLM responses are probabilistic, can differ, and may reflect limits in training data. Google also says context matters in scientific applications; neither statement is a Claude vs ChatGPT math result.

What the documentation cannot tell you

The vendor pages do not tell you whether either assistant catches a sign error, selects the right method, proves every step, stays consistent after correction, or fits your time budget. They cannot convert a subscription price into the cost of a verified solution.

As explained in Chat Picker’s method, Chat Picker has no quality, speed, accuracy, reliability, or benchmark results of its own and does not rank the assistants. Your own workload supplies the missing evidence: matched problems, matched settings, and a checking method you can explain.

How to check it yourself

Run each prompt in a fresh chat with identical wording, plan level, and tool settings. Establish your own reference solution and checking standard before reading either answer.

  1. Symbolic algebra. Give: “Solve ax + b = 0 for x. Separate a ≠ 0 from a = 0, state the condition on b, and verify by substitution.” Look for valid division and complete cases. Record correctness, skipped steps, and any correction you would request.

  2. Calculus. Give: “Differentiate f(x) = x sin(x). Name the rule, expand the derivative, and check it by differentiating the two product terms separately.” Look for retained factors and a check against the original function. Record correctness, rule use, and any mismatch.

  3. Conditional probability. Give: “For two rolls of a fair die, derive in symbolic terms the probability that the first roll is the maximum, given that the sum exceeds the arithmetic mean of all possible sums. Define the sample space and justify the conditioning.” Look for ordered outcomes, ties, and the conditioned event. Record whether the denominator matches the condition and assumptions are explicit.

  4. Proof and notation. Give: “For real x, prove that √(x²) = |x|. Explain the role of the nonnegative square root, and identify the incorrect claim √(x²) = x.” Look for the domain, sign cases, and a conclusion that follows. Record whether all stated values are covered and notation stays consistent.

  5. Applied modeling. Give: “Water enters a reservoir at a constant volumetric rate greater than the constant leaving rate. Derive an expression for the time needed to empty it. State the rate condition and constant-volume assumption.” Look for defined variables, units, and a meaningful domain. Record unstated assumptions and any unit inconsistency.

  6. Error correction. Give: “A solution treats possible sums from two rolls of a fair die as equally likely. Identify the error, use ordered outcomes, and derive the probability of an even sum.” Look for recognition that sums can have different underlying frequencies. Record whether the faulty assumption is replaced and the derivation is auditable.

Which rows of the comparison matter

On the Claude vs ChatGPT matrix, start with Context window in the app and How usage limits are described. Then check Free plan, Low-cost tier, Main paid plan, and Heavy-use plans if you expect repeated use. Add Team plan for shared academic or work use. Training on your chats matters for private material; Ads matters where the matrix has a documented statement. Treat a blank as “Not verified,” not zero, and confirm the vendor page before subscribing.
