Claude vs ChatGPT for Music Theory

Vendor pages document Claude and ChatGPT uploads, limits, data controls, and accuracy warnings, but do not establish which assistant is better at music theory.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

For Claude vs ChatGPT in music theory, OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ and Anthropic’s upload guide document what can be supplied, but the vendor pages read for this comparison do not say which assistant analyzes notation or suggests counterpoint more accurately. Chat Picker has not tested either assistant for music theory, so this page compares documented limits and leaves the choice to your own trial.

What the vendors document for Claude vs ChatGPT

Start with score inputs. As read on October 1, 2026, OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ says Free and paid plans support uploads, with a 512 MB hard limit per file, a cap of 2M tokens per text or document file, a 20 MB limit per image, and 3 file uploads per day for Free users. OpenAI may lower the Free limit during peak hours.

Read on the same date, Anthropic’s upload guide lists 500 MB per chat file and 30 MB per project file. It says Claude analyzes both text and visual elements in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer, but processes only text in PDFs from 101 to 1000 pages; token limits may still apply to extracted content.

The plan pages, also read on October 1, 2026, list ChatGPT Plus at $20/month billed monthly and Claude Pro at $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month on annual billing with $200 up front. Claude’s pricing page says context can reach 1M on every plan, while ChatGPT’s pricing page lists 27K for Instant on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro. These are capacity labels, not evidence of music-theory accuracy.

The same pages list limited uploads on ChatGPT Free, while Claude Free includes web search, file creation, code execution, and memory. Neither feature list says it produces better harmonic analysis.

For data handling, OpenAI’s upload FAQ says uploaded files follow the corresponding chat’s retention period and chats remain in the account until deletion. Its pricing page offers an opt-out on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro; Anthropic’s pricing page lists opt-outs for Free, Pro, and Max and says Team is not trained on by default. Check those controls before sending unpublished scores or student work.

Both vendors’ accuracy notes call for checking the work. OpenAI’s accuracy note says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading output and may sound confident when wrong; it recommends treating output as a first draft and verifying important information. Anthropic’s accuracy note calls incorrect or misleading information hallucination, says Claude can make convincing mistakes, and advises against using it as a singular source of truth.

What the documentation cannot tell you

The cited documentation does not say whether either assistant consistently labels Roman numerals, distinguishes a tonicization from a modulation, catches parallel fifths, writes species-valid counterpoint, or preserves voice leading in a reharmonization. It also does not establish accuracy on images of notation, response speed, or consistency across repeated attempts.

Chat Picker has no quality, accuracy, speed, reliability, or benchmark results of its own, and publishes no scores, rankings, survey data, or user statistics. Unsourced statistics and test results from the earlier version have been removed.

How to check it yourself

Use the same rights-cleared material, account settings, and grading rubric for both assistants. Run each prompt twice without changing its wording.

  1. Roman numerals. Give both assistants: “Analyze this pitch-class progression in C major: C-E-G | G-B-D-F | A-C-E | F-A-C | C-E-G | G-B-D | F-A-C | G-B-D. Give a Roman numeral, chord quality, inversion, and one phrase-leading reason for each. If inversion is not inferable, say so.” Check whether the labels follow the requested key and whether uncertainty is stated. Write down any mismatch against your reference.

  2. Modulation and key. Give: “Analyze this melody in A major: B4 C#5 E5 D5 C#5 B4 A4 | C5 D5 E5 F#5 E5 D5 C#5 B4. Identify any tonicization or modulation, name the local tonic if there is one, cite the cadence evidence, and state whether the melody returns to A major. Separate observation from inference.” Check whether the cited notes support each key claim. Record the labels, evidence, and unresolved ambiguity.

  3. Voice-leading errors. Give: “Check these two SATB sonorities in C major: chord 1 has soprano G4, alto E4, tenor C4, and bass C3; chord 2 has soprano D4, alto B3, tenor G3, and bass G2. Identify parallel perfect intervals and direct fifths or octaves, name each voice pair, and show interval and direction. Explain the rule before labeling an error.” Check the interval calculations and voice pairs. Write down each flagged error and the rule given.

  4. Counterpoint. Give: “Write first-species counterpoint above D4 E4 F4 E4 D4 C4 D4 A3. Use one whole note for each cantus note, no rests, begin and end consonant, and avoid parallel perfect fifths and octaves. Label every interval and flag any conflict rather than silently breaking a constraint.” Check note count, alignment, interval labels, and constraint handling. Record any violation or conflict.

  5. Reharmonization. Give: “Reharmonize this four-measure chorale in G major while preserving the outer voices: measure 1 has G4 over C3; measure 2 has F#4 over G2; measure 3 has E4 over A2; measure 4 has D4 over D3. Supply a four-part realization, label each chord and function, explain the final cadence, and flag voice-leading problems.” Check that the outer voices remain unchanged. Record each suggested chord, its rationale, and any voice-leading issue.

Which rows of the comparison matter

Open the Claude vs ChatGPT matrix before choosing a plan. For this use, read these rows:

  • Free plan: input allowances and other included features.
  • Main paid plan: price and billing terms if Free limits are restrictive.
  • Context window in the app: document-capacity labels, not analysis-quality results.
  • How usage limits are described: caps for uploads, tools, and messages, including whether exact counts are published.
  • Training on your chats: documented opt-out or default settings for your material.
  • Ads: whether the matrix documents ads for a plan; this does not indicate theory accuracy.

For shared course or client files, also check Team plan and workspace settings. Chat Picker’s method marks an unconfirmed cell “Not verified” and leaves it blank; each published figure carries a vendor source and read date. Confirm current terms on the vendor page before subscribing because plans and prices change.
