Free AI Chat No Sign Up: Privacy Notes

Privacy notes for free AI chat without sign-up, including OpenAI's current-browser-session rule for logged-out chats.

For a free AI chat with no sign-up, OpenAI documents a direct route: logged-out ChatGPT is available in supported countries. Google also documents some signed-out Gemini web features, while Anthropic’s Claude page describes sign-in rather than a logged-out mode. These vendor pages were read on October 1, 2026; the key privacy question is what happens to a prompt after you send it.

Free AI chat without registration

OpenAI says ChatGPT is free to use before account creation. The option is not yet available in Europe, except in the UK. While logged out, you can have one conversation at a time, cannot save chat history, and can access the chat only during the current session in the same browser. Starting a new chat makes the previous chat inaccessible. These are access and saving rules; they do not describe every processing step.

Anthropic’s Claude login help, read on October 1, 2026, offers Google login or an emailed sign-in link but does not describe logged-out use. A Claude Free plan should therefore not be treated as a documented no-account option. The page gives no logged-out conversation rules because it does not describe a logged-out mode.

For Gemini, Google says some features in the web app work without signing in, while additional features and saving activity require a Google Account. That is narrower than a promise that a complete guest chat has defined storage and retention. Do not assume that “no sign-in” means “no storage.”

ChatGPT: training is separate from saving

OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT, read on October 1, 2026, says control availability depends on whether you are signed in, your plan, and workspace settings. If you use ChatGPT without signing in, open Settings and turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; OpenAI says the choice is saved in that browser. When signed in, the setting applies to your account across devices.

Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” prevents new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models. It does not delete or hide chats already saved. A control over model improvement therefore does not itself clear your history.

Temporary Chat provides a different set of tradeoffs. It does not appear in chat history, create or update memories, or train OpenAI models. As read in October 2026, OpenAI nevertheless says a temporary chat may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. A personalized temporary chat can use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins, subject to account and workspace settings, and you can disable personalization when the chat starts.

If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular history chat and follows the account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. In other words, “not in history” does not mean “never retained.”

For signed-in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro users, OpenAI says you can request a copy of your data and delete your account from settings. Deletion is permanent and affects associated data and subscriptions. The cited vendor pages do not specify when deletion finishes for every data type, so account deletion should not be presented as a promise of immediate removal everywhere.

Claude: incognito is not memory off

Anthropic’s consumer model-training privacy page, read on October 1, 2026, says Claude chats and coding sessions are used to improve models when the user chooses to allow that use. Conversations flagged for safety review may also be used or analyzed to improve detection and enforcement of the Usage Policy.

Incognito chats are the exception for model improvement. Anthropic says they are not used to improve Claude even if Model Improvement is enabled in Privacy Settings. This setting and the choice to start an incognito chat address different privacy decisions.

Memory is another setting. Anthropic’s Claude memory help page, read on October 1, 2026, says Memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max users across web, desktop and mobile. You can change it in Settings > Memory, or turn it off for one chat before sending the first message.

Turning Memory off for one chat does not make that chat temporary. It remains in chat history, and Claude can still find it through past-chat search from another conversation. Incognito is different: Anthropic describes it as temporary, not saved to chat history and excluded from past-chat search.

Anthropic also says personal or sensitive subjects are not stored as memory by default. That is separate from whether the conversation remains in history. The Claude pages we read do not state a fixed retention period or standard deletion deadline for regular chats, so do not fill that gap with an assumption.

Gemini’s logged-out privacy gap

Google’s Gemini sign-in help, read on October 1, 2026, confirms the boundary: some Gemini web features work without an account, but additional features and saving activity need one. The vendor pages we read do not say how long a signed-out Gemini interaction remains accessible, whether you can retrieve or delete it later, or whether it is used to improve Gemini.

If you need a saved activity, plan to sign in. If you need a documented retention rule for a sensitive prompt, the signed-out option does not provide one in these pages.

This gap differs from OpenAI’s logged-out rules. OpenAI describes current-browser-session access and provides a model-improvement control for signed-out use. Google’s page does not provide those details for signed-out Gemini features.

Compare documented differences

Use Chat Picker’s free plans compared row by row, Claude vs ChatGPT matrix and Gemini vs ChatGPT matrix for the documented plan and feature rows. Chat Picker checked its published comparisons on October 2, 2026. Each figure identifies the vendor source and date read; when a figure could not be confirmed, the site marks it “Not verified” and leaves it blank.

These pages report what vendors publish. Chat Picker has not run assistant quality, speed, accuracy, reliability or benchmark tests, and it has no test results, scores, rankings, survey data or user statistics of its own. This guide therefore does not claim to have observed how an assistant handled a test conversation.

Before typing without an account

Avoid putting any of the following into a chat you use without an account:

  • Passwords, one-time codes, recovery phrases or private keys.
  • Card, bank, tax or government identification details.
  • Health details or precise location information.
  • Customer records, confidential employer material, private source code or unreleased work.
  • Material you would not want sent to a service when you cannot verify the signed-out retention rule on its page.
