Informational vs Conversational AI: Which Tool Fits You?

Vendor documentation lists different source, file, project, and usage options, while your own trial is needed to judge which assistant fits your workflow.

Informational use emphasizes source visibility, file handling, and limits; conversational use emphasizes sustained dialogue, projects, and usable allowances. Vendor pages document different structures, but Chat Picker’s method says the site has not tested ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and cannot declare a universal winner. The previous page’s unsourced statistics and test results have been removed.

What the vendors document

Unless stated otherwise, the vendor facts and figures below are as read on October 1, 2026.

Source visibility comes first. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance says ChatGPT relies on training data without search, can access and cite live web sources with search or Deep Research, and should not be the final source for important information. Anthropic’s incorrect-response guidance says Claude can make convincing mistakes and tells users to check cited and original sources. Google’s Gemini sources guidance says a response may expose links to public websites, uploaded files, and connected Workspace documents or email. Its Gemini app safety guidelines describe model outputs as probabilistic and warn against harmful inaccuracies.

  • ChatGPT plans: OpenAI’s Free tier FAQ documents unlimited everyday text chats under abuse safeguards, with separate limits for tools. What is ChatGPT Plus? lists $20 per month, more messages, broader model options, and message caps that can vary.

  • Claude plans: Claude’s pricing page lists Free at $0 with web search, file creation, code execution, and memory. Its Pro help page says usage varies with message and file length, conversation length, model or feature, and resets on a five-hour session. Weekly or monthly caps may also apply.

  • Gemini plans: Google AI plans list Free at $0 with a Google Account and 15 GB of storage; Plus at $4.99 per month with 2x usage and 400 GB; and Pro at $19.99 per month with 4x usage and 5 TB. The Gemini Apps limits page says use depends on prompt complexity, model or feature, and chat length, refreshing every five hours until the weekly limit.

File and data rules can be equally important:

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ says Free users can upload up to three files per day, each chat file has a 512 MB hard limit, and an associated file is deleted within 30 days after chat deletion unless an exception applies. Its pricing page lists a training opt-out for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro.

  • Claude: Claude’s upload guide lists a 500 MB chat-file limit and a 30 MB project-file limit. Its Projects page says paid plans use retrieval-augmented generation and can expand capacity up to 10 times near context limits. The pricing page lists training opt-out on Free, Pro, and Max and says Team is not trained on by default.

  • Gemini: Google’s file-upload guide allows up to 10 files per prompt, with each video up to 2 GB and each other supported file up to 100 MB. The Google AI plans page does not state an app training setting, so Chat Picker leaves that point unverified.

What the documentation cannot tell you

The documentation cannot tell you whether an assistant will preserve constraints through several turns, use the right passage from a long document, interpret a chart correctly, or stay consistent after revisions. It also cannot establish speed, accuracy, or reliability on your material. A large allowance is not evidence of answer quality, and a visible source list is not evidence that every citation supports the claim. Those are judgments your own trial must make; Chat Picker makes none.

How to check it yourself

Use the same plan conditions where possible. Record the date, plan, tools enabled, and any model label shown in the interface.

  1. Check source grounding. Upload operations_manual.pdf and ask: “Using only this manual, what approval is required before a vendor contract is signed? Quote the exact sentence, name the page and section, and answer ‘not found’ if the manual does not say.” Look for alignment between the answer, quotation, and location. Write down unsupported claims, citation errors, and omitted conditions.

  2. Check file analysis. Upload sales_summary.csv and ask: “Which product groups have the highest total revenue? Show the calculation and create a bar chart.” Check column selection, arithmetic, labels, and whether the chart matches the table. Record every correction needed and any mismatch between the written answer and chart.

  3. Check conversational continuity. Give this brief: “Create a promotion for a free Saturday repair workshop at a community library. Registration is required, and the venue has no parking.” Then request a shorter version, a child-friendly version, and a registration checklist. Look for retained constraints and changes that match your instructions. Write down contradictions, forgotten details, and unnecessary repetition.

  4. Check current-source behavior. Ask: “Using web search, summarize current U.S. Department of State passport eligibility requirements and cite official pages.” Repeat it in a fresh chat with web search disabled. Look for dates, direct official links, and a clear separation between retrieved material and unsupported additions. Record missing context, stale-looking claims, and citations that do not support the text.

Which rows of the comparison matter

Start with the ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini matrix. For this use, read Free plan, Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, and Training on your chats first. Add Low-cost tier, Main paid plan, or Heavy-use plans to compare spending and capacity; add Team plan for shared use and Ads if interface advertising affects your choice.

Each matrix figure carries its vendor source and read date. Entries that could not be confirmed are blank and marked Not verified. Prices are US dollars unless a cell says otherwise, but country pricing and plans can change, so confirm them before subscribing. The matrix compares documentation; it does not rank answer quality.
