2026 How to Pick Your Best AI Chat Assistant: Features and Pricing
Plan prices, limits, and features differ across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, so test your own reasoning, coding, file, and usage needs before choosing.

To choose among ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in 2026, use vendor pages to settle plan prices, limits, context, data controls, and included inputs, then test those differences against your own work. Vendor documentation can show what a plan includes, but not which assistant will perform best on your tasks. Chat Picker has not tested, scored, benchmarked, or ranked them; this page gives you a practical test plan instead.
Know these limits before you start
As read on October 1, 2026, the free plans differ on paper: OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats subject to safeguards, with separate limits for uploads, images, voice, and deep research; Anthropic's Claude pricing page includes web search, file creation, code execution, and memory on Free; and Google's US AI plans page requires a Google Account for Free and lists 15 GB of storage. For individual paid plans, OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus overview lists Plus at $20 per month, while Google's US AI plans page lists Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month. Confirm the applicable location and checkout terms before subscribing.
Published usage limits are not interchangeable. OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page gives separate caps without publishing exact message counts. Anthropic's Claude pricing page says usage resets on a rolling five-hour window and paid plans also have weekly limits. Google's US AI plans page says limits vary with prompt complexity, features, and chat length, refreshing every five hours until the weekly limit.
Context figures need separate treatment. OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page lists 27K on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro for Instant models, plus 256K on Go and Plus or 400K on Pro for reasoning models. Anthropic's Claude pricing page says context can reach 1M on every plan and varies by model; Google's US AI plans page does not state an app token figure, so leave that comparison unverified.
Before uploading files, record training controls. OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page lists an opt-out on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. Anthropic's Claude pricing page lists an opt-out on Free, Pro, and Max and says Team is not trained on by default. Google's page states no training setting, so verify the applicable control before relying on it. OpenAI's accuracy guidance says ChatGPT can sound confident when wrong, while Anthropic's Claude accuracy guidance says not to use Claude as the only source of truth. For advertising, OpenAI says Go may include ads; the reviewed Claude and Google plan pages say nothing about ads in their apps.
The test plan
Do not import standardized benchmark scores into the decision. Repeat tasks from your own work and keep a log containing the assistant, plan, task, input type, observed result, source use, limits hit, and notes.
-
Prepare a real project brief, budget, and list of constraints. Give each assistant this instruction: “Using the attached files, write a decision memo with a recommended option, assumptions, unresolved questions, and a verification checklist. Label file facts separately from suggestions.” Look for requirement coverage, invented assumptions, and unsupported claims. Record the response and each issue.
-
Prepare a JavaScript function that sums prices:
function total(items) { return items.map(item => item.price).reduce((sum, price) => sum + price); }Ask: “Explain what happens with an empty list or missing price, then return corrected code and tests.” If code execution appears, ask it to run the tests. Record whether it explained, corrected, and actually ran them. -
Prepare a synthetic invoice, a photo of a handwritten checklist, and a spreadsheet that should agree. Ask: “Compare the attached files. List matching fields, discrepancies, and items needing manual review, and identify the source location for each claim.” Record accepted formats, upload warnings, source references, and errors you verify yourself.
-
Prepare a long report with repeated definitions and a deliberate contradiction. Ask: “Write a decision memo from the report. Resolve the contradiction, cite the relevant sections, and list anything the report does not answer.” Record truncation warnings, section-level citations, omissions, and handling of repeated details.
-
Prepare a question and an authoritative source excerpt. Ask: “Answer only from the excerpt, quote the supporting text, and state what it does not establish.” If a web-search control is available, repeat the question and compare the citations with the original. Record unsupported statements and citation fidelity, not answer confidence.
-
Prepare the completed log. Ask: “Recommend the lowest plan that covers the recorded must-haves. Separate plan facts from assumptions and list what must be confirmed on the vendor page.” Do not treat the answer as purchasing advice. Verify every plan claim, then record the listed price, payment cadence, limits encountered, needed features, and data control.
How to read your results
Start with non-negotiables: available budget, required input types, data control, team rules, and context needs. Mark each plan as pass, fail, or unverified and attach a short reason. Then compare preferences such as clarity, useful code, source handling, and interface fit.
Do not average unlike observations or let polished writing outweigh a failed must-have. If several plans pass, use your log and current vendor terms to choose. An afternoon of testing supports a decision about your workflow, not a general ranking.
Where the plans differ
Use the ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini comparison matrix as a checklist. For individual use, start with the rows for Free plan, Low-cost tier, and Main paid plan; add Heavy-use plans or Team plan when relevant. Then check Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, Training on your chats, and Ads.
Each published figure includes its source and read date. Prices are US dollars unless a cell says otherwise, and an unconfirmed item is marked “Not verified” and left blank. Confirm the selected plan and current price on the vendor page before paying.
