2026 AI Data Visualization: Comparing Chart Types and Interactivity

Vendor documentation and a same-file test plan compare chart types, interactivity, data handling, limits, and plan differences without scores or rankings.

Sources checked 2 Oct 2026

Vendor pages settle only part of the comparison. OpenAI's data analysis documentation, read October 1, 2026, says ChatGPT can create static charts and some interactive bar, line, pie, and scatter charts; Google's file-upload help, read on the same date, says the Gemini web app can create customizable charts from uploaded spreadsheets but does not name chart types or controls. Claude's upload documentation, read on the same date, says XLSX requires code execution and file creation but does not state whether native charts or interactive controls are available; the previous version's unsourced statistics and test results have been removed, and Chat Picker's method says the site has not tested the assistants.

Know these limits before you start

Start only with a file you have permission to use. As read on October 1, 2026, OpenAI's file uploads FAQ limits each CSV or spreadsheet to approximately 50 MB, with the limit depending on row size. Claude's upload help, read on the same date, sets a 500 MB limit per chat file and a 30 MB limit per project file. Google's file help, also read that day, allows up to 10 supported files per prompt and up to 100 MB per non-video file.

At the app level, Claude's pricing page says context can reach 1M on every plan and varies by model; OpenAI's pricing page lists separate context windows for Instant and reasoning models by plan; Google's plans page gives no app token figure. All were read October 1, 2026.

The usage descriptions are not directly comparable. The OpenAI and Claude pricing pages publish no exact message counts, while Google's plans page says compute-based limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly limit and paid tiers provide 2x, 4x, and up to 20x. For training on chats, OpenAI and Anthropic list plan-specific opt-outs, Anthropic says Team is not trained on by default, and Google's page states no setting; all were read October 1, 2026.

Use non-sensitive data unless your privacy review is complete. OpenAI's usage policy prohibits unauthorized aggregation or distribution of private or sensitive information; Anthropic's Usage Policy calls for relevant human expertise in elevated-risk use cases; and Gemini's safety guidelines warn that outputs may reflect training-data limits and should not create significant harmful inaccuracies. These pages were read October 1, 2026.

The test plan

Prepare sales.csv with Month, Region, Product Category, Revenue, and Units fields. Include blank cells, mixed date formats, currency symbols, a duplicated header, and an impossible date. Use the same file and prompts in a fresh chat for each assistant and plan.

  1. Chart coverage. Upload sales.csv and give this instruction: “Create these views from the uploaded file: a bar chart of revenue by region; a line chart of revenue by month; a pie chart of unit share by product category; and a scatter chart of units against revenue. Label axes and series, show currency and units, identify missing or excluded records, and keep each view in the response. State whether each view is static or interactive.” Look for views actually rendered in the product. Record the output form for every requested chart: interactive view, static image, code, table, text only, or refusal.

  2. Data transformation. Give this instruction: “Clean sales.csv without replacing the source. Return a cleaned CSV and an audit table listing each duplicate header, invalid date, blank cell, currency-symbol change, and inferred data type, with the original value, cleaned value, and rule applied. Exclude nothing silently.” Look for reproducible rules and explicit handling of invalid records. Record parsing errors, unexplained omissions, and whether you receive a usable cleaned file.

  3. Interaction. Ask: “Build an interactive monthly revenue line chart with hover values, zoom, region filtering, a reset control, and a data table. Keep the source data downloadable and list any controls the interface cannot provide.” Test every visible control rather than judging from its description. Record each control as working, missing, or unavailable, plus any static, table, or code fallback.

  4. Accuracy and job fit. Use the cleaned file and ask: “Recalculate every displayed revenue total and unit share from the source data. Return an audit table with the chart label, source value, displayed value, discrepancy, and explanation; then provide a static export, alt text, a method note, and the cleaned data file for a weekly operations meeting.” Check calculations, labels, scales, units, source traceability, and exports. Record mismatches, failed exports, elapsed time, reruns, and any usage messages or credits consumed.

How to read your results

Turn each log entry into pass, fail, or unknown, but define the requirement first. A pass needs visible evidence such as the rendered response, a screenshot, an export, or a returned file. If you need a native interactive chart, a code listing does not pass unless it runs in the interface where you will use it.

Decide separately for each job instead of averaging the assistants into one ranking. A static report, exploratory dashboard, and repeated team workflow can have different requirements. Treat an unresolved data setting as a stop condition for sensitive uploads. Calculate cost per chart only when your log and invoice capture the relevant billed usage; a subscription price alone does not establish value.

Where the plans differ

Use the Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison matrix and check the rows for Free plan, Low-cost tier, Main paid plan, Heavy-use plans, Team plan, Context window in the app, How usage limits are described, Training on your chats, and Ads.

The pricing pages were read October 1, 2026. OpenAI lists Go at A$13/month on its Australian page and Plus at $20/month billed monthly; the US-dollar Go price is not verified. Anthropic lists no tier between Free and Pro, then lists Pro at $20/month monthly or $17/month with annual billing and $200 upfront. Google lists AI Plus at $4.99/month and AI Pro at $19.99/month. These are plan prices, not measured cost per chart, so confirm the vendor page before subscribing.
